Our family business has always been in manufacturing, originally making traditional billboards and advertising hoardings in the Champagne region of France. By 2006 we restructured to concentrate on supplying pre-fabricated modular buildings — a response to a changing marketplace — and STM Modules, Create A Cabin’s parent company was launched. The prefabricated cabins use a construction system similar to billboards, therefore it was a natural progression for our product to evolve into a cost- effective bespoke prefabricated modular building kit that was designed to order, quick to make and easy to build.​

​At that time, many agricultural and rural businesses were looking for ways to create new revenue streams, diversify or add value by selling directly to their customers. In particular, we noticed that many commercial premises have unused buildings and our prefabricated DIY cabins could be easily and cost-effectively used to repurpose these areas. By installing a modular building within an existing structure, it creates a fit-for-purpose useable space for a fraction of the cost of a new build and gives instant space to any business.​

Our first project was a poultry abattoir, manufactured in our factory and delivered for self-assembly to the farm, after that, we received orders from many different types of builds; artisan food makers, offices, classrooms, farm shops, creatives, butchers and others who had identified the advantages of a prefabricated DIY cabin over a traditional build.​

Create A Cabin is owned and managed by Sébastien Dont and his wife Clare. Sébastien worked in investment banking in the City and completed an MBA at Cranfield before returning to the family business. They relocated to the UK with their business and family in 2015, now living and working in Canterbury, Kent.​

Following success in Europe, our prefabricated cabins attracted much interest and demand from the UK market. Many small businesses have seen the benefits of an additional workspace that was built made to measure, inexpensive, quick to assemble and adaptable. So much so that we decided to launch Create A Cabin for the UK market in 2015.​
